INTERVIEW WITH GUY McMONSTERMAKER HOUSTON HORROR FILM FEST

From the floor of the Houston Horror Film Fest, artist, author, and sculptor Guy McMonstermaker talks about his work, his journey, and what makes his creations stand out in the world of collectibles. Interview conducted by Daniel from “Drop the Spotlight.”

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR PRODUCTS

Let’s see—so I am a sculptor, an illustrator, and an author. I make high-end statues and collectibles. I also write books and design shirts. Basically, the way I see it, I’m a one-man Sideshow Collectibles. If you’re a collector, that’ll probably mean something to you. I just do the job of about 136 people in one shot.

HOW ARE YOU ENJOYING HOUSTON HORROR FILM FEST?

I am loving Houston Horror Film Fest! This is the first one we’ve ever done and it is phenomenal. As far as atmosphere goes, it’s one of the best high-energy venues we’ve done. We do a lot of shows, but the people here are incredibly nice, incredibly kind. And I’m not just talking about the vendors—the patrons too. It’s like a whole other level than what I’m used to, and I’m really loving it.

SO YOU’RE BASICALLY A SMALL-BATCH CUSTOM BUILDER IN A WAY?

Not exactly. Small batch—yes. Custom—no. In that sense, these are actual products. Most of the time, when people say “custom,” they mean something you won’t be able to find anywhere else or something a bit more niche. I fully intend to rip the head off NECA and all of them in 10 to 15 years, so “custom” is a little less ambitious than what I’m aiming for.

WHAT GOT YOU INTO MAKING THESE?

Well, my whole life I’ve loved art and illustration. Can’t get more cliché than that—but it’s true. I started illustrating when I was four years old. Then I got into sculpting, and I’ve been sculpting for 26 years. As for the company itself, I remember exactly how it happened: I was sitting at home with my son, looking up collectible statues of the Alien Queen. Everything I saw, I was like, “I don’t really want that in my house.” It looked beautiful, sure, but not quite what I wanted.

ANY UPCOMING EVENTS WHERE PEOPLE CAN FIND YOU?

Yes, sir! Next up is the Baton Rouge Cult Classic in September. Then in October, we’re doing the Arizona Atomic Monster Weekend. And there’s another one after that, but I can’t remember what it is right now—you’ll have to forgive me, I’ve spent the last couple of months just prepping for this show. My brain is as fried as you can imagine!

I’ve always taught my son: if you’re gonna critique something, you better be ready to put your money where your mouth is. So I did. And three years later… here we are.
